Market Fundamentals

What Drives the Gold Rate in Pakistan Today?

Pakistan's gold rate is not set in isolation — it is the product of three interconnected forces that interact every trading day.

1. International XAU/USD Spot Price

Gold is a globally traded commodity priced in US dollars per troy ounce. When the international spot price rises or falls, Pakistan's Sarafa Association adjusts the local rate on the following morning's bulletin.

2. USD/PKR Exchange Rate

Because international gold is priced in dollars, every movement in the rupee against the dollar amplifies or dampens the local gold rate. Since 2021, the Pakistani rupee has lost roughly 60% of its value against the dollar. This PKR depreciation is the single biggest structural reason why gold in Pakistan now costs over Rs 4,00,000 per tola.

3. Pakistan Sarafa Association Daily Bulletin

The Karachi Sarafa Bazaar publishes the official local benchmark rate each morning. All major cities — Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Quetta — adopt this rate as their standard.

Gold Purity

24K, 22K, 21K, 18K Gold — What Do Karats Mean?

Karat measures the proportion of pure gold in an alloy. In Pakistan, jewellery is predominantly 22K while investment gold bars are 24K.

KaratHallmarkPurityVisualCommon Use in Pakistan
24K99999.9%Gold bars & investment — too soft for jewellery
22K91691.7%Mainstream jewellery — bridal sets, bangles, necklaces
21K87587.5%Daily-wear jewellery, Gulf-influenced market standard

Jewellery Buyer's Guide

Ratti, Masha, Tola — And the Hidden Cost of Kat

Understanding Pakistan's traditional gold weight units — and the jeweller's deduction system called kat — can save you thousands of rupees.

Weight Units

  • Tola — 11.6638 grams — the standard unit for gold pricing in Pakistan
  • Masha — 0.9720 grams (1 tola = 12 masha)
  • Ratti — 0.1215 grams (1 masha = 8 ratti)

What is Kat?

When you sell gold jewellery, the jeweller applies a deduction called kat — a per-masha adjustment that accounts for the copper or silver alloy mixed into the gold, polish, and non-gold elements.

Real-World Kat Example (5 tolas, 22K)

  • 5 tolas = 60 masha
  • Minimum kat = 1 ratti per masha = 60 ratti total
  • 60 ratti = 0.625 tola deducted
  • You are paid for only 4.375 tolas — not 5

How to Protect Yourself

  • Request a written slip showing weight, karat, kat applied, and metal value separately
  • Compare with at least two jewellers before selling
  • For plain gold with no stones, negotiate kat down from 1 ratti/masha
  • For purchases, always ask for making charges as a separate line item

Frequently Asked Questions

Gold Rate Pakistan — FAQ

What is the gold rate in Pakistan today per tola?
The gold rate in Pakistan today is Rs 490,800 per tola for 24K (pure) gold and Rs 449,900 per tola for 22K gold, based on the Pakistan Sarafa Association daily benchmark. Rates are updated each morning by the Karachi Sarafa Bazaar and apply nationally across all cities.
What is the 22K gold price in Pakistan today?
The 22K gold price today is Rs 449,900 per tola, Rs 38,572 per gram, and Rs 385,720 per 10 grams. 22K gold (hallmark 916) contains 91.67% pure gold and is the most common karat for bridal jewellery and bangles across Pakistan.
How much is 1 tola of gold in Pakistan? What is a tola in grams?
1 tola of 24K gold today is Rs 490,800 (Sarafa benchmark). A tola is a traditional South Asian weight unit equal to 11.6638 grams or 0.375 troy ounces — the standard unit used by jewellers and Sarafa markets across Pakistan.
What is the difference between the Sarafa rate and the international spot rate?
The international spot rate is the XAU/USD gold price converted to PKR at the open-market dollar rate. The Pakistan Sarafa rate includes a local premium of Rs 2,000–8,000 per tola for import duties, transport, and local market conditions. The Sarafa rate is what you actually pay at a jeweller. This page is the only resource in Pakistan showing both rates side by side.
How is the gold rate set in Pakistan?
The gold rate is set daily by the Pakistan Sarafa Association based on the Karachi Sarafa Bazaar. Each morning the association publishes an official bulletin rate for 24K gold per tola. All other karats and all other cities adopt this Karachi benchmark. The rate is derived from the international XAU/USD spot price converted at the prevailing USD/PKR rate, plus a local premium.
Which city has the cheapest gold rate in Pakistan?
Karachi has the lowest gold rate as the Sarafa benchmark origin. Other cities carry a small additional premium — Rs 50–250 per tola for major cities like Lahore, Islamabad, and Faisalabad, rising to Rs 300–400 per tola for remote regions like Gilgit and Skardu, reflecting genuine transport costs. The real cost difference between cities lies in jewellers' making charges, which vary far more than the metal rate.
What is the Zakat nisab for gold in Pakistan?
The Zakat nisab for gold is 7.5 tolas (87.48 grams) of 24K gold. At today's Sarafa rate, this equals approximately Rs 3,681,000. Gold holdings exceeding this amount that have been held for one full lunar year are subject to 2.5% Zakat.
